Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. James 1:16-17
I wondered if my study of James would connect with my Advent reading and now I wonder how I thought they couldn’t. Right after James urged his readers to persevere through trials, he reminded them of God’s never changing goodness. When we’re muddling through difficult seasons, or in the middle of harsh trials, we tend to forget it or at the very least, stop thinking about God’s goodness.
The Father of lights is the good and perfect Gift Giver. He was and always will be. The One who gave us the sun, moon and stars…..His steadfast love endures forever (Psalm 136).
My Advent reading is 1 John 4:9-11. “In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.”
The good and perfect gift of His son came down to us.
As we reflect on God’s goodness, let us think about how we can show goodness to those who need to feel His love in tangible ways. Will we be a reminder of God’s enduring love to someone this season? Can we give comfort? Show tenderness?
I pray those of us who know and walk in His love will love on those who, for whatever reason, do not feel His love. Those different or distant from us. Those who live in ways we don’t understand. Those who have no hope. I pray the love we exude will spark hope in the hearts of those who have none.
Only God’s love flowing through us can do that.
