Am Learning

I’m attending my first writer’s conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This means several things.

First, it means I know I’m a writer.

Second, it means I’m telling others I’m a writer.

Both of those are remarkable because only a few years ago I wouldn’t say it. I thought it and part of me knew it, but I kept it to myself except to those who knew me best.

Attending this writer’s conference means some other things. It means I’m eager to learn from others about what to do with my writing. It also means I’m willing to make an investment in learning my craft.

I’ll share more about it after I’ve had time to process everything I’ve gained from being here, but I can confidently say after two full days of the conference that it’s one of the best investments I’ve ever made. It’s better than I anticipated and the knowledge, support, and encouragement I’ve received is priceless.

What’s your craft? What are you passionate about? What do you dream of doing?

I encourage you to take a step toward your passion. Make an investment to learn all you can. Connect with others who have the same dream.

And see what happens.

“You are the light of the world – like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.”     Matthew 5:14-15

What a courageous leap – congratulations. I think of myself as a writer, but I don;t have the courage (yet) to go to a conference. And after 550 posts – I still yearn to write a blog post. I teach kids (8th grade) and Sunday I head to North Carolina for a three day conference about teaching social studies – I am excited and nervous – all at the same time. I was in Grand Rapids yesterday – passing through on my way home. Enjoy and learn, I am looking forward to both at my conference… and maybe I’ll muster the courage to attend a writer’s conference someday.

Clay, muster the courage! And I wish I’d known you were passing through. I’d love to meet some of my blogging friends in person. There’s another conference I’m considering in 2018. I’ll keep you all posted.

Which conference is it? How do you suggest looking for quality writing conferences to attend? I’ve been wanting to attend a writing conference during the summer and MI is the ideal place. I did a bit of searching on Google to find one, but couldn’t find anything.

Glad you had such a great time. I’m looking forward to reading about how it went and what you learned! ?

Lonna, this one is called Speak Up. The director of this also directs another one happening in September called Maranatha. Not sure of the location of that one. Look it up because I think it’s ear here. If you can’t make it to one this year I encourage you to look into attending this one in 2018. The dates are June 28-30 next year. My brother in law told me about this one. He attended last year and told me how excellent it was.
